March of Dimes

March 19, 2009 at 1:13 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Every year, half a million babies in the U.S. are born prematurely. Premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death and many life long disabilities. The funds we raise in WalkAmerica support research that saves babies’ lives.

The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.

The Little Gym of Winston-Salem is a proud supporter of this event.

Anyone who joins our team and raises $300 or more for the walk, gets a
semester of FREE Classes (10) from The Little Gym!
We can credit your account to be used at any time – no expiration!

Suze Orman Supports The Little Gym!

March 19, 2009 at 1:09 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Suze Orman, one of America’s most recognized experts on personal finance, spoke positively about The Little Gym on a recent episode of her show. Her show features a segment titled “Can I Afford It?” in which viewers call in and tell Suze what they want to buy as well as their income, savings, home loans, and other debt. Suze then determines if the caller can or can’t afford the item and explains why. Given the current economic climate, a customer called and asked if The Little Gym is something that she should invest in. Of course, the answer was yes!

How Much Exercise Is Enough?

January 27, 2009 at 1:03 am | Posted in Health Articles | Leave a comment

Parents need to ensure that their kids get enough exercise. So, how much is enough? According to the 2005 dietary guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), all children 2 years and older should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise on most, preferably all, days of the week. In addition to providing more practical advice on providing a healthy, balanced diet, the new dietary guidelines also suggest that kids eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Here are the current activity recommendations for kids, according to the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE):

Age Minimum Daily Activity Comments
Infant No specific requirements Physical activity should encourage motor development
Toddler 1½ hours 30 minutes planned physical activity AND 60 minutes unstructured physical activity (free play)
Preschooler 2 hours 60 minutes planned physical activity AND 60 minutes unstructured physical activity (free play)
School age 1 hour or more Break up into bouts of 15 minutes or more
